Westport First Selectman: Prepare For Flooding, Outages

WESTPORT, Conn. – The following is a CodeRed telephone message issued by Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff Friday evening regarding Hurricane Sandy:

"The Town of Westport is gearing up for a very serious storm event. We are told it may be very similar to the nor’easter that hit Westport in December 1992, maybe worse, for those of you who remember that one. "I urge you to take all possible precautions and make preparations as have been outlined so many times before. There is much information on the town website, . Included is a map to show flood inundation areas according to different category storms. "Do not be lulled by the fact that Westport may not suffer a direct hit. The meteorologists tell us that being on the northeast side of the eye of the storm can very dangerous. We also have a full moon on Monday and that will exacerbate flooding. "Sandbag-making materials will be available Saturday at the Public Works garage on the Sherwood Island Connector. Move your cars to higher ground at your earliest convenience. "And for those in especially vulnerable areas, consider evacuating before the event. We will not risk the lives of first responders to come get you when the waters are deep and the winds are blowing. "Finally, be prepared for prolonged power outages. Yes, improvements have been made since last year, but, nevertheless, we expect widespread and prolonged outages. Information on shelter openings will be made available on Saturday. "We will keep you up to date via CodeRed, the town website, social media, and via the Staples radio station, WWPT 90.3 FM."
