The ADA was signed into law on July 26, 1990, and prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation.
Marpe's statement notes the work the Community Inclusion Task Force (CITF) has done in the area since being formed in February 2007. The CITF noted that around 10 to 15 percent of Westport residents have some sort of disability, according to the 2000 U.S. Census data.
In response to the CITF recommendation, a Municipal Agent for People with Disabilities was appointed to handle any issues disabled residents had with the community.
Examples of changes made include more adaptive programs for children with special needs from the Parks and Recreation Department.
Marpe also mentioned his desire to move past the ADA standards with the creation of a Commission on People with Disabilities.
“I look forward to addressing the needs of those with physical and developmental challenges now and into the future, and to insure that Westport continues to be a welcoming and inclusionary community for all people.”
