WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport Fire Department is hosting its second annual Donate Life Month kickoff event at fire headquarters Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
The event, meant to raise awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation, will include short speeches from organ transplant recipients and family members of deceased organ donors, Fire Chief Andrew Kingsbury said.
The event is a reflection of the ongoing commitment that the Westport Fire Department has to support organ and tissue donation and the partnership between Donate Life Connecticut and the Westport Fire Department, Kingsbury said in a statement.
There are currently over 113,000 Americans on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ transplant, Kingsbury continued. Unfortunately about 18 people die every day simply because an organ was not available in time.
As a show of support, the department will fly the Donate Life flag outside fire headquarters, along with 64 other communities across the state, Kingsbury said. The public is invited to attend the event to learn more about organ donation and how they can help.
Fire headquarters is located at 515 Post Road E.
