Westport Firefighters Help Rescue Cat From Drain

WESTPORT, Conn. – Curiosity did not kill Nip the cat, thanks to Westport firefighters. On Thursday morning, firefighters were called to a home on Stonybrook Road where a  cat had gotten inside a storm drain.

When firefighters arrived, they were met by the cat's owner, Dick Fincher, who explained that Nip somehow wandered into the storm drain in front of the house, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Kepchar said.

Firefighters removed the grate of the storm drain and tried to lure Nip to the opening of the pipe so they could pull him up. After several unsuccessful attempts, firefighters placed a can of cat food at the opening of the pipe and Fincher called for Nip, bringing him within reach. Firefighters then held Fincher by the waist as he reached down to the pipe to pull Nip up.

"Both were happy to be reunited," said Kepchar.
