WESTPORT, Conn. A Westport firefighter was hospitalized Sunday morning with possible heat exhaustion after battling a blaze at 26 Buena Vista Drive in Westport, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Kepchar reported.
At 5:15 a.m., firefighters were called to the home after a neighbor walking his dog smelled and saw smoke coming from the home. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire on the home's first floor.
The homeowners were not home at the time, and the blaze was brought under control in about 15 minutes, Kepchar reported. Off-duty firefighters were brought in to assist with overhaul and cleanup.
The firefighter sent to the hospital was later released. Fire crews were at the home until about 8:45 a.m. The fire was under investigation by the fire marshal's office.
