As on Monday, state Department of Transportation shuttle buses will pick up train riders at the Bridgeport, Fairfield Metro and Fairfield stations Tuesday and make drop-offs in Westport, Police Chief Dale Call said.
Unlike Monday, though, Metro-North and DOT officials expect “significantly more riders” on both the trains and the shuttle buses, Call said. As such, residents are encouraged to allow more time to travel to work, he said.
Westport commuter Michael Buchman said his commute Monday morning was uneventful. However, he said he doesn't know what to expect Tuesday.
“My train leaving Westport was pretty empty [Monday] morning — emptier than usual,” Buchman said. “I think a lot of people telecommuted. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be the real test.”
Once again, Railroad Place will be used for shuttle bus pickups and drop-offs only Tuesday. Also, parking lot No. 2, located at the end of Railroad Place next to the westbound platform, will be closed to commuter parking until 9 a.m. Tuesday, Call said.
Ferry Lane will be the designated spot to pick up and drop off commuters at the station by car.
“Trains may be on either side,” Call said in the statement. “It does not matter where you are dropped off."
Because trains may arrive on more than one track, Metro Transit Authority personnel will again be stationed on both the east and westbound platforms directing commuters to the right location.
No train service will run to or from Westport’s Green Farms station Tuesday. Also, shuttles are not expected to make pickups or drop-offs at that station, either, Call said. Westport transit riders should check the Norwalk Transit District website for the most current information regarding shuttle services in Westport, he said.
There is relief in sight for commuters, though. Metro-North President Howard Permut said Monday evening all trains on the New Haven Line should be operating on normal schedules by Wednesday morning.
