WESTPORT, Conn. – Biergarten on the Green, part of Westport's Downtown Foodie Fest, drew 500 citizens who sampled craft beers and a hearty deli lunch Saturday as the Zany Oompah Band performed.

The music provided beer garden flavor to the event in which 30 craft brewers from across New England and beyond poured two-ounce samples for the guests, who zealously held out their plastic cups as the brewers poured.

Oscar’s Deli provided the lunch: hefty grilled sausage sandwiches and dill pickles.

“It’s great fun, it’s an original idea and the beer’s fantastic,” said Judith Kahn Zwyer, a Westport resident who attended the event with a friend. “Look at all the people, and the weather’s good.”

Cathy Colgan, special event coordinator for the sponsoring Westport Downtown Merchants Association (WDMA)., said it was the first time the event has been held, but it will become annual if it’s a success.

Guests paid $40 each, with proceeds benefiting town projects and local charities supported by the WDMA.
