Calling all Westport dog owners: If your pooch is more than 6 months old, it's almost time to get or renew your dog license. Beginning June 1, dog licenses and applications for new dog licenses can be picked up at the town clerk's office.
"Licensing your dog verifies that rabies immunization is up to date, as the dog owner must present a copy of the pet's rabies certificate when obtaining a license," Town Clerk Patricia Strauss said in a statement.
Dog licenses will be good from July 1 through June 30, 2012. If your dog is spayed or neutered, the cost for a license is $8. If not, the cost is $19. A $1 per month penalty will be added onto the original fee for license renewals issued after June 30.
If you don't get your dog licensed or your dog is found not wearing a current dog tag on its collar, you can be ticketed $75.
To get your license, stop by the town clerk's office, Room 105 in the Town Hall, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You may also mail payments and all required certificates, along with a self-addressed stamped return envelope, to Westport Town Clerk, P.O. Box 549, Westport, CT 06881.
Also, from now until June 30, the town clerk's office is holding a pet supply drive benefit the Westport Animal Shelter. New toys, bedding, towels and canned or dry dog food are being collected.
