WESTPORT, Conn. ? Dog licenses can be purchased from the Westport Town Clerk's office starting June 1. All dogs six months and older must be licensed. Owners who do not license their dogs face fines, Westport Town Clerk Patricia Strauss says.
"A $75 infraction will be issued for any non-licensed dog and for any dog not wearing a current dog tag attached to a collar around its neck or body," Strauss said.
Licenses cost $8 for a neutered male or spayed female, and are $19 otherwise. There is a $1-per-month penalty for licenses issued after June 30. Licenses will be valid from July 1 to June 30, 2013. Last year, 2,737 dogs tags were issued, a 15-year high.
The town clerk's office is also holding a pet supplies drive through June 30 to benefit the Westport Animal Shelter. New toys, bedding, towels and canned and dry dog food will be collected.
Licenses can be purchased at the town clerk's office Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in Room 105 at Westport Town Hall, 1110 Myrtle Ave. Payments and certificates can also be mailed with a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Westport Town Clerk, P.O. Box 549, Westport, CT 06881. Certificates will be returned with the license.
