The local programs are open to homeowners who are totally disabled or who have reached the age of 65 by the date of application. For state programs, homeowners must have reached the age of 65 by Dec. 31, 2013. Qualified applicants for the state program are citizens who own homes or hold a life-use title to their home, have resided in Connecticut for one year prior to filing an application, and whose qualifying income does not exceed $34,100 for single, or $41,600 for married couples.

Westport’s program provides qualified homeowners with either a tax credit with a maximum income level of $55,000 and/or a tax deferral with a maximum income level of $75,000, representatives said. Qualified homeowners with incomes of $75,000-$100,000 are able to defer tax increase from the previous year only.

The local Veterans Program offers $20,000 off of the assessment. This is also based on qualifying income not to exceed $59,100 for single and $66,600 for married. To be eligible for this program, discharge papers must be recorded with the Town Clerk.

Those looking for more information on the programs are asked to contact the Assessor’s Office at 203-341-1070 or Human Services at 203-341-1050. All applications will be taken by appointment only. Detailed information of these programs is available on the Westport website.
