WESTON, Conn. The fight against cancer comes to Weston on Saturday as high school students and other members in the battle participate in the Weston/Westport Relay For Life event at Weston High School.
Cancer survivors will walk a Survivor Lap at the beginning of the event that will last all night for the most dedicated participants. They have already raised more than $91,000 for cancer research and have a goal of $100,000.
This is the second annual Weston/Westport Relay For Life event, which will seek to top last years event, which was rated the No. 1 relay in New England.
The event kicks off at 3 p.m. with performances by school bands. After the opening ceremony at 4 p.m., the Survivor Lap will be walked. Events continue into the evening, with yoga, games, live band performances and the zumba dance at midnight.
Supporters of the event participants are welcome to stay until 11 p.m. Then members of the 68 fundraising teams will stay the night with parent chaperones.
Cancer never sleeps, so we dont, either, said Rob Gerowe, a development executive at the American Cancer Society. People walk around the track all night long with closing ceremonies Sunday morning.
Teams have raised money on websites and at events, including bake sales and dinners. On Saturday, theyll seek more donations through wristband sales and food concessions. The theme for the event is Disney, so everyone will be dressed in purple with Disney characters. Its going to be a festive atmosphere, Gerowe said.
