WESTON, Conn. Police Chief John Troxells decision to rescind his retirement plans was largely based on what he called a groundswell of support from Weston residents.
In January, Troxell sent a letter to the Police Commission announcing he would retire in June. But during an executive session meeting earlier this week, he said he wanted to remain the leader of the police force. Although not much was said as to what exactly went down during that meeting, Troxell said Thursday that due to a large number of residents' support, and after speaking with his family, he felt he had to change his mind.
I received a lot of cards, letters and emails from the public asking me to reconsider. And I felt that if the public, who I am hired to serve and protect, is happy with me and feel safer with me at the steering wheel of the police department, then I have to continue, Troxell said Thursday.
Westonites Bob Gardner and Fran Goldstein also circulated a petition around town that thanked Troxell for his 31 years of service and, according to Troxell, also asked him to reconsider.
You know, in most cases, a petition usually asks someone to do something negative but this was something good from the people of Weston. When you get something like that, you really have to give it some weight, he said.
Rick Phillips, chairman of the Police Commission, said he is obviously thrilled about Troxells decision to stay.
Hes a great chief and as we started the process to replace him it was very clear that we were never going to find someone to fill his shoes, Phillips said. Those are pretty big shoes to fill and I am just thrilled that he decided to stay.
First Selectman Gayle Weinstein said Thursday she also was happy Troxell reversed his decision. I am looking forward to continue our excellent working relationship, she said.
Troxell admitted that when he originally announced his retirement, he might have pulled the ripcord a little too soon.
You know, I have to say this is the best decision," he added. "Im happy, my wife is happy and I am probably three times happier now because I have the publics support. I have the support from the Police Commission and the support of the first selectman. I think moving forward, we will all work as a team for the benefit of the town of Weston.
