WESTON, Conn. -- The Aspetuck Valley Country Club golf course was named a  “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP), according to the Weston Forum.

ACSP certification is awarded to golf courses that are able to document a wide range of environmental practices intended on preserving the natural heritage of the local environment, as well as the game of golf, the Weston Forum said.

Aspetuck originally received the designation in 1998, but courses are re-certified every two years. AVCC is only one of 13 golf courses in Connecticut to be honored with the designation, The Weston Forum reported.

AVCC opened in 1968 with nine holes and added another nine the following year. It remains the only golf club in the area that does not require tee times.
