Bob Atkinson will be honored as Weston's Democrat of the Year on Sunday, May 22.
Gov. Dannel Malloy, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes will be in attendance at Melissa Koller's home, 15 Ridge Road, Weston, for the Spring Fundraiser and Campaign Kick-Off.
Atkinson has lived in Weston for 45 years and joined the Democratic Town Committee in 1972. He has served as both chair and secretary and continues his service as a member of the Search Committee.
He has participated in many town boards, including the Board of Finance and the Board of Assessment Appeals. He has been a member of the Kiwanis since 1990, where he has done everything from being part of the Philanthropy Committee to splitting firewood for needy Weston families.
Atkinson served on the Weston Warm-Up Fund for 12 years, including as chairman, and is an active member of Norfield Congregational Church, where he has served on the Board of Trustees for two years and was a member of its Nominating Committee.
Atkinson and his wife, Jane, moved to Weston in 1966 in search of a larger home and more land for their growing family daughter Jennifer and son Jeffrey and a shorter commute into Manhattan for Bob.
He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in business and pursued a career in broadcasting as vice president of C.E. Hooper. Atkinson went on to start Atkinson Consultants Inc., which focused on research, mergers and acquisitions for radio and television stations.
Using his knowledge of the broadcasting business, he served for many years on the Area 9 Cable Council and also served as its treasurer.
