A West Redding resident, while driving on North Park Road, crossed the middle lane, struck a mailbox and crashed into a utility pole last week, Easton police said. He was not injured.
When police arrived, the detective smelled alcohol on the man's breath. The man was incoherent and did not recall the details of the accident, police said. There were no skid marks to indicate an attempt at breaking, leading the investigators to consider the possibility that the man had fallen asleep at the wheel.
He was unable to perform a field sobriety test. The police arrested the man and charged him with driving under the influence, refusal to be fingerprinted and failure to drive on the correct side of the road. He was released on a $25 bond, and his court appearance was Jan. 19.
