Voters Group Wants Weston to Speak Up

UPDATE: Speak Up 2011 has been canceled this weekend due to the expected snowstorm. No alternative date has been set for the event. Check back with The Daily Weston for updates.

ORIGINAL STORY: It's time to voice your opinions. The League of Women Voters of Weston holds its 20th annual Speak Up event on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Norfield Parish Hall.

The program is an opportunity for residents to meet face to face with town and school officials. Last year, roughly 100 residents showed up to discuss a variety of topics, but focused mainly on finances and school goals.

Weston resident Laura Smits will moderate this year's event. Smits is a Weston registrar of voters and member of the League of Women Voters of Weston. She also serves on the Democratic Town Committee.

Smits moved to town in 1999 and has a history in radio, advertising, public relations and writing. She also moderates the monthly Current Events program at the Weston Senior Center.

Most elected officials are expected to attend, as is Weston's recently appointed interim superintendent of schools, Dr. John Reed.
