U.N. Ebola Expert From Westport To Speak To Y's Men Group

WESTPORT, Conn. -- A Westport man with an expertise in helping those most vulnerable in the world will be the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston’s featured speaker at its April 30 meeting.

Anthony Banbury, assistant secretary-general for field support for the United Nations, will speak on his recent experience as head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response and other U.N.-related activities in the world’s troubled regions. 

The meeting will be at the Unitarian Church in Westport at 10 Lyons Plains Road. Coffee and doughnuts start at 9:45 a.m. with Banbury’s talk at 10:30 a.m.

A graduate of Tufts University with a bachelor's degree in political science and the Tufts Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Banbury’s early career at the U.N. took him to Thailand, Cambodia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. He also worked as an adviser on the Balkans in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (1997-1999) and at the National Security Council in the White House (2000-2003).

He also served as the Asia Regional Director for the World Food Programme in Bangkok (2003-2009), managing humanitarian relief and development operations in 14 countries, before taking on his current job as U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Field Support responsible for providing operational support to U.N. peacekeeping and special political missions around the world. 

The Y's Men of Westport/Weston is an organization of semi-retired and retired men with a continued interest in activity, fellowship, learning and community service.
