Two Westport Residents Face DUI Charges

There usually aren't many drivers on the roads at 3 a.m., making even the smallest offenses, like a busted headlight, even more obvious. This was the case for Westport resident Avery Acevedo of 34 Woodside Ave. on Dec. 23.

According to police reports, Acevedo, 20, was spotted on Bridge Street with one of her headlights out. But that's not all. She was then allegedly seen swerving and driving at erratic speeds. When police stopped Acevedo, the officer smelled alcohol and marijuana coming from inside the car. A 40-ounce bottle of Coors Light beer was also reportedly in plain sight on the floor behind the driver's seat.

Acevedo failed field sobriety tests and admitted to having smoked marijuana shortly before being stopped. She was charged with operating under the influence, failure to display lights and possession of alcohol by a minor. She is due in court Jan. 3.

Also from the police blotter:

• Westport resident Michael Mitchell of 5 Canal St. was reportedly involved in a minor car accident at Post Road East and Compo Road on Friday night. According to police reports, Mitchell, 53, allegedly hit the rear of another car and then drove away. But the driver of the second car involved got Mitchell's license plate number.

When officers arrived at Mitchell's residence, they found him in the parking lot and smelled alcohol on his breath. A bottle of vodka was found inside the car he had been driving. Mitchell, who refused breath tests, failed field sobriety tests and was charged with operating under the influence, evading responsibility, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under suspension, insurance coverage below the minimum and following too closely. He is due in court Jan. 4.
