Two Dead in Flaming Merritt Crash Near Westport

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Two people died in a car crash on the Merritt Parkway near the Fairfield-Westport border Saturday morning.

Fairfield Fire Department crews responded to the area between exits 42 and 44 at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday. They found a single car in the grass along the northbound side of the highway, completely on fire. When the flames were put out, they discovered two bodies inside. Both people were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Connecticut State Police, the state medical examiner and the Fairfield Police Department still were investigating the cause of the accident. Drivers can expect lane closures on the Merritt intermittently Saturday morning while crews are at the scene.
