A Naugatuck woman escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon after her car got caught underneath a tractor trailer on I-95 south in Westport.
At around 2:30 p.m., Westport firefighters were called to Exit 17 on I-95 south where they found a car pinned underneath the rear wheels of a trailer carrying hazardous waste for the state, Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Gottfried reported. The driver, Laurie Smethurst, was still sitting in the car.
With Westport firefighters and EMS's help, Smethurst was able to safely exit her car. She was transported to Norwalk Hospital by EMS for observation.
The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured. The truck, which was carrying PCB contaminated soil for the state, was undamaged and was able to drive away from the scene. No hazardous materials were spilled during the incident.
Connecticut State Police Troop G in Bridgeport are investigating how the accident happened.
