Many new restaurants and businesses planted roots in Westport over the course of the year, bringing more diversity to town. At the end of January, The Whelk, an oyster bar and seafood restaurant, opened in Saugatuck Center. It’s owned by Chef Bill Taibe of Westport's farm-to-table restaurant LeFarm, and Massimo Tullio, co-owner of Fat Cat Pie Co. in Norwalk
Also in January, longtime Westporters welcomed back an old favorite when Art's Deli reopened on Post Road West.
The highly anticipated Spotted Horse Tavern opened in March on Church Lane in the restored 1802 Sherwood House. The restaurant offers new American cuisine, and was the brainchild of Staples High School graduates Kevin McHugh and Tommy Febbraio, and their business partner, Pete Mennona. All three also co-own the Gray Goose in Fairfield.
Just feet away from the Spotted Horse, the trendy clothing chain Urban Outfitters opened in March. The store, located at 101 Post Road E., is two levels and has entrances on the Post Road and Church Lane.
Making Church Lane an even bigger destination was the addition of Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Café, which opened Nov. 26 on the opposite side of Urban Outfitters at 4 Church Lane — the space formerly occupied by Café Manolo. The restaurant boasts an impressive variety of sushi and sake.
Another highly anticipated addition to Westport was the Blu Parrot, a live entertainment venue and restaurant that opened in October at 60 Charles St. Co-owned by Westport resident Adam Lubarsky, the Blu Parrot features live music every day it’s open, along with dinner, brunch and a bar.
Most recently, Moja, a South American-Asian fusion restaurant, debuted Dec. 8 at 12 Wilton Road. The restaurant brings the flavors of South America and Asia together under one roof, specializing in Columbian-style arepas and kones — temaki sushi-inspired wraps. Moja also offers a variety of infused sakes, which are made onsite.
Other big additions to Westport included Terrain Garden Center and restaurant, Arezzo, a new and larger Goodwill store, and many more.
