The accident occurred at 8:38 a.m. Tuesday on I-95 southbound between Exit 18 and Exit 17, said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Kepchar.

Westport firefighters responded and checked all three drivers for injuries while evaluating the scene.

The Suburban was hit from behind and was pushed into the vehicle transporter, Kepchar said. The driver of the Chevy escaped serious injury and was treated on the scene by Westport EMS and released, he said.

Firefighters worked to control a leaking gasoline tank on the Chevy and had to use speedi dri and absorbant booms to contain the fuel spill, Kepchar said.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified of the spill.

Tow trucks were called and transported all three vehicles away from the scene. The last Westport Fire Department vehicle left the scene at 9:41 a.m.

Connecticut State Police are in charge of the investigation.

Drivers are reminded to leave ample space between vehicles while traveling, especially on limited access highways.
