WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Country Playhouse will receive a $125,000 matching grant from the state to redesign its driveway, Westport state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg announced.
The redesigned Post Road East entrance will increase visibility and improve driving conditions and pedestrian safety, Steinberg said in a statement.
“The Westport Country Playhouse is not merely one of Westport’s greatest cultural assets, it’s a state treasure,” said Steinberg said. “This modest grant will address a long-standing traffic-safety problem which has put pedestrians and drivers at risk.”
As a matching grant, the Playhouse must also contribute $125,000 toward the project.
The Playhouse, at 25 Powers Court, draws audiences from Westport and the region. A wide range of famous actors have performed there over the years, including Paul Newman, Alan Alda, Lucie Arnaz, Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, Gene Wilder, Richard Dreyfuss, Neil Patrick Harris, Eartha Kitt, David Hyde Pierce and many more.
“Attractions like the Westport Country Playhouse are not only historic gems that instill local pride and are great for tourism, but they also add to our state’s overall economic development and job growth efforts,” Gov. Dannel Malloy said in the statement.
