Staples Physics Teacher Was 43

Stephen G. Roberts, a physics teacher at Staples High School, died Sunday while undergoing a routine procedure at a New Haven hospital. He was 43.

Staples Principal John Dodig said the school plans to hold a moment of silence for Roberts during which Dodig will address the Staples community.

The Science Department is planning to create a science award in Roberts' memory, said A.J. Scheetz, Science Department chair.

Roberts, a cancer survivor, was born Dec. 12, 1966, in Burlington, Vt., to Earl G. and Janne (Breer) Roberts of Middletown. He was a graduate of Drexel University and went on to receive a master's in teaching from Southern Connecticut State University.

In 1981, Roberts met his future wife, Debra Giordano Roberts, on a joint Middletown High /Wilson High crew team. They married in 1989 and moved to the Stony Creek area of Branford in 1999.

In addition to his wife and parents, Roberts is survived by four sons, Nicholas, Alexander , Jacob and Samuel Roberts, all of Stony Creek; a brother, Gregory (Norma) Roberts of Houston; two sisters, Lisa (Wayne Woods) Roberts of Lexington, Mass., and Julie (Jim) Hipke of Manchester, N.H.; his maternal grandmother, Kathryn Breer of Barre, Vt.; sisters-in-law Suzanne Giordano of Meriden and Lori (Rick) Bennett of East Haddam, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Stony Creek Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. in Church of Christ, 192 Thimble Island Rd., Branford, with a reception immediately following in Fellowship Hall. The W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home in Branford is in charge of arrangements.
