Bedford Police have released information on a serious late afternoon crash that resulted in 14 people being hospitalized and the hours-long closure of a stretch of Route 172 near the Bedford/Mount Kisco border Monday.

The crash, which occurred around 3:45 p.m. in the area of West Patent Road, involved a passenger vehicle and a privately owned bus transporting adults with special needs, said Bedford Police Lieutenant Matthew T. Hawley.

The roadway was immediately closed and officers requested multiple ambulances. Bedford Police, along with the Accident Investigation Unit and the Bedford Hills Fire Department were also dispatched to the scene.

The passenger vehicle was occupied by the driver, a 55-year-old female resident of Stamford who was transported to the Westchester County Medical Center with serious injuries, Hawley said.

The bus was occupied by a driver, attendant and 11 passengers.

The driver of the bus was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital with minor injuries. The passengers on the bus were transported to Westchester Medical Center, Northern Westchester Hospital and White Plains Hospital, all with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries. A total of 10 ambulances responded and transported patients.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Town of Bedford Police Accident Investigation Unit.
