STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Mobile Wellness Center, which provided mammograms for women at their work or home, announced that it suspended operations as of Sept. 25.

"Losing this program is so difficult and the news is such a surprise and disappointment for all of us," said Mary Henwood Klotz, director of women’s and children's service line for Stamford Hospital.

Any appointments scheduled for future dates are also canceled.

In a letter sent to clients, the Mobile Wellness Center said the $27.5 million impact of the hospital tax approved by the state legislature and unanticipated cuts to Medicaid caused Stamford Hospital to decide to close down the Mobile Wellness Center.

Other programs are being closed or consolidated as part of cost-saving measures.

The Mobile Wellness Center had been offering mammograms to women in the area for 15 years.

All women who have scheduled a mammogram on the mobile coach will now be offered a new appointment for a 3-D tomography mammogram at the Tully Health Center in Stamford or the Darien Imaging Center.

No-cost mammograms will continue to be provided to uninsured and undocumented women at the Tully Health Center and Darien Imaging Center. That is due to through the support of the Breast Cancer Alliance, the Connecticut Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Pink Aid and the state Department of Public Health.

"We are proud of the award winning and comprehensive breast cancer services we continue to offer at Stamford Hospital and we look forward to growing our relationships with women in our community to increase early detection," Klotz said.

The Tully Health Center, located at 32 Strawberry Hill Court in Stamford, can be reached at 203-276-PINK. Its hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

The Darien Imaging Center, located at 1500 Post Road, can be reached at 203-276-PINK. Its hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
