WESTPORT, Conn. — Sherwood Island in Westport is one of the state parks in Connecticut that are closed on Monday, Oct. 30, after a powerful storm raged overnight.

Sherwood Island is closed Monday because of downed tree limbs in the park, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The park is "closed until further notice," DEEP said Monday.

Also closed Monday are:

  • Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam

  • Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford

  • Haystack Mountain State Park in Norfolk

Three other parks were closed in the morning but have reopened: Hopeville Pond State Park in Griswold, Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme and t

he Green Falls section of Pachaug State Forest in Voluntown.

Nearly 5 inches of rain fell overnight in Westport, which also saw strong wind gusts. Schools were also closed Monday in town.

DEEP did not say when the park would reopen. Sherwood Island State Park comprises 235 acres of land along Long Island Sound.
