Sharlene Surprise Hays, 1976 Staples Grad

Stamford resident and former Westporter Sharlene Surprise Hays, a Staples High School graduate, died Feb. 13. She was 53.

Born and raised in Westport, Hays graduated from Staples in 1976. She later went on to graduate from Jacksonville University. When she returned to Westport, Hays went to work at Boatworks Yacht Sales in Rowayton, where she remained for 24 years until her retirement this past November.

The wife of Gene Hays, she enjoyed going to the beach and boating. She also loved dogs, especially golden retrievers.

In addition to her husband, Hays is survived by her mother, Anne Surprise of Cape Cod, Mass.; brother Scott and his wife Deborah of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Capt. Bill Surprise; and a brother, Steve Surprise.

A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VFW, 465 Riverside Ave., Westport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Golden Retriever Rescue .
