WESTPORT, Conn. If you've been dreaming about sinking your teeth into a Shake Shack burger, dream no more, burger fans. Starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Westport Shake Shack will officially open its doors to the hungry masses.
Described as a modern day "roadside" burger joint, Shake Shack celebrated its opening Tuesday night during an invitation-only party. Hundreds of people, including Westport resident Adam Pearl, enjoyed an early taste of what the restaurant has to offer.
"As a physician, I recommend it," Pearl said, holding up a Shack Burger, which consists of American cheese, lettuce, tomato and Shack Sauce. "It's juicy, full of flavor and the lettuce/tomato add a healthy kick. It goes down smoothly."
Pearl, his wife Denise, and friends Michael and Karen Wolfe, said they tried everything served up during the party. Both Pearl and his wife said their favorite item was the 'Shroom Burger a fried Portobello mushroom filled with melted muenster and cheddar cheese, then topped with lettuce, tomato and Shack Sauce.
Wolfe said the cheeseburger was his favorite. His wife, Karen, said she enjoyed the Shack Burger the most. Beside the food, Wolfe said he most enjoyed the atmosphere. "An outdoor patio that serves beer and wine in this town is much appreciated and will be well used," Wolfe said.
As the first Shake Shack to open in the state, Westporters aren't the only ones thrilled about its arrival. When Southbury resident Catherine Vieira and her 8-year-old Christina Volpe wanted a Shake Shack burger, they would have to travel to New York.
Christina also has Celiac disease, so she can't eat foods that contain gluten. Shake Shack, which offers a gluten-free menu, is one of the few kid-friendly eateries Christina can enjoy. "We love Shake Shack," Vieira said. "It's such a fun place to grab a burger and a milkshake."
In addition to all the Shake Shack classics found at every location, the Westport menu will feature several neighborhood-inspired treats, such as the Sasco 'Crete (vanilla custard with a slice of seasonal locally baked pie). A portion of Sasco Crete proceeds will be donated to the Westport Arts Center, Shake Shack CEO David Swinghamer said.
