Services Set For Michael Murphy Of Fairfield, Who Died In Boating Accident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Services will be held Friday for Michael B. Murphy of Fairfield, who died over the weekend in a boating accident on Long Island Sound. He was 53.

Murphy died Sunday after he was ejected from his boat when it hit a breakwall in the New Haven Harbor area.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Murphy will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 1, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. 

He was raised in Huntington and was a 1982 graduate of Fairfield College Preparatory School. Murphy earned a bachelor's degree from Marist College and an MBA from the University of New Haven. 

Murphy was vice president and general manager of Alinabal in Milford.

He was a member of the Gaelic American Club, the Patterson Club and the South Benson Marina. He served on the Board of Directors of Goodwill, the Gaelic American Club and the Connecticut Irish Open Scholarship Committee, where he chaired the Annual Irish Open Golf Tournament. Murphy loved music, especially Bruce Springsteen, the Red Sox, his family roots in Ireland, golfing and celebrating any occasion with his family. 

He is survived by his wife, Kim; his children Micaela and Shane; brothers and sisters Robert J. Murphy Jr. and wife Colleen of Lordship, Timothy F. Murphy of Stratford, Maura C. West and husband Mark of Mequon, Wis., and Kathleen A. Dumouchel and husband John of Walpole, Mass.; his in-laws, Richard F. and Vivian Kral of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Richard F. Kral Jr. and wife Cynthia of Greenwich and Christopher J. Kral and wife Lisa of Fairfield; and 22 nieces and nephews. 

Murphy was born in Bridgeport, the son of the Dr. Robert J. and Margaret Mary Murphy.

Scott Richard Trautman of Fairfield, 46, also died in the accident. Murphy, who owned and was operating the boat, was heading south in New Haven Harbor on Saturday evening when it struck the north side of the west breakwall. Both Murphy and Trautman were ejected from the vessel and suffered fatal injuries.

Calling hours for Trautman will be Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, Fairfield Center.
