REDDING, Conn. - A last-minute delay on the repair of the Simpaug Turnpike Bridge prevented its reopening Wednesday. The long-closed road is now expected to welcome drivers back on Friday.
"They had to stop putting up the guard rails so they could get the lines painted Wednesday," said Redding Highway Superintendent Jeff Hanson. "The embankment is steep so they have to put a fence up before traffic can go on it."
Russell Bush, project manager for Rotha Construction Co., which was awarded the project at a cost of $3,173,503, said the bridge should reopen Friday. It has been closed since October, 2011.
A ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12 is scheduled that will be attended by Connecticut Department of Transportation commissioner James Redeker.
