Post Office Confirms New Westport Home

Despite strong objections by Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, the U.S. Postal Service has confirmed its selection of Playhouse Square as the new home of the main post office in town.

"The U.S. Postal Service has done a disservice to the town and its residents by selecting a buyer for the present building who is unwilling to accommodate a smaller postal retail operation in its plans," Joseloff said in a statement.

The current post office, located at 154 Post Road E., was kept under consideration. But it would not have occupied the entire building as it currently does — the postal presence in the building would have been smaller. When the Postal Service was considering bid proposals, Joseloff said he made it clear that the town favored this option.

"However, the purchaser of the property has plans for the property which do not include space for the Postal Service within the building," Joseph J. Mulvey, a real estate specialist for the Postal Service, wrote in a March 23 letter to Joseloff.

Furthermore, Mulvey said the Playhouse Square property, which has yet to be disclosed, "meets our requirements, is available and was offered in response to our search for space."

"We believe the Playhouse Square property will provide the community with an efficient, modern facility that offers a safe working environment for our employees and a level of service expected by our customers," Mulvey wrote.

The current home of the post office is listed for lease on HK Group, a commercial real estate group. Franco Fellah, executive vice president of HK, said the building has been under contract for about three months.

He said it's too early to tell how the buyer is leasing the space and whether there will be multiple tenants or just one. "It will most likely be used for retail or restaurant, but it can also be used for medical," Fellah said. "We are pre-marketing the space for lease."

Although there is a buyer, Fellah said the post office will remain there for a while. "It's not like once we close, the post office has to move out," he said. "It will probably be there for a few more months."
