Pools Open, Swimmers Scarce

Longshore's three side-by-side pools, a large, a medium and one just for kids six and under, officially opened for the summer season today at 11 a.m. The day's breeziness might explain why no one showed up to swim.  Pool Director Phil Walklet said this pool season, hand passes, which must be purchased in advance at Parks & Rec, are computerized. This means they can be scanned and the pass picture compared to the Town's database. The change is expected to eliminate passes that are "loaned."

Phil says the large pool has been repainted and a new gate to the grassy area beyond the pools' fence has been added. This will allow people to picnic and then return to the pool for swimming. (No food is allowed at the pools.)

Summer 2009, pool attendance dropped by 15,000 from the year before, to 29,000. This was due to a string of twenty plus rainy days that kept swimmers away. "On a typical weekend day, we get about 1,000 swimmers and on July 4th, about 1,500," Phil says, adding, "We check the PH and chlorine levels every hour."
