WESTPORT, Conn. Westport resident Joseph Cohen, 18, was arrested Monday night on a warrant for reckless operation of a boat back in June, police said.
On June 28, the department received a report of a vessel in distress and people in the water yelling for help in the Saugatuck River off Harbor Road. Officers responded to the area and the Marine Division found an unoccupied boat driving in circles at a high rate of speed in between Cedar Point Yacht Club and Longshore Marina.
Officers searched the water for people, but no one was found. The boat eventually ran out of gas and was towed to Compo Marina. The boat's registration came back to a resident at 92 Harbor Road who said he had no knowledge of anyone being on the boat, police said.
During the investigation, it was learned that the registered owner's son, Cohen, and two other people were picked up in the water by another boat and dropped off at the dock on Harbor Road. No one involved was injured.
When the boat was towed back, officers found a 30-pack of beer and a bottle of vodka in plain sight. Marijuana and paraphernalia were also found inside the boat. Cohen was charged reckless operation, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of alcohol by a minor. He was released after posting a $500 bond and s scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 11.
