REDDING, Conn. – One passenger of the vehicle that was struck in Redding by a Metro-North train Sunday afternoon died at Danbury Hospital, the MTA announced.

The other three occupants of the Subaru are being treated for unknown injuries at the hospital, the MTA said. Three of the four occupants needed to be extricated by the Redding Fire Department.

The car attempted to cross the Long Ridge Road crossing of the Danbury Branch Line at around 1:20 p.m. when it was struck by the train, according to the MTA.

The identities of the vehicle's passengers, their ages and the severity of the injuries were not released Sunday night.

Assistant MTA Police Chief Steve Conner called it a "major accident" and that it might take time for the reconstruction of the accident to be completed.

A statement from the MTA said that as "a result of the incident, train service on the Danbury Branch has been temporarily suspended and replaced with bus service operating between Danbury and South Norwalk."
