Norwalk's Concussion Guidelines Dedicated To Jonathan Brown

NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk concussion guidelines were dedicated in Jonathan Brown's memory last week by the Norwalk Common Council.

The city of Norwalk announced last week its concussion guidelines will be dedicated to Jonathan Brown, a Brien McMahon High grad who died of head injuries sustained in a minor dirt bike accident in 2012.

The city of Norwalk announced last week its concussion guidelines will be dedicated to Jonathan Brown, a Brien McMahon High grad who died of head injuries sustained in a minor dirt bike accident in 2012.

Brown, a student at the University of Alabama, died in 2012 in Memphis, Tenn. as the result of a dirt bike accident. He was 20.

In the accident, Brown barely bumped his head on the soil. He was knocked unconscious immediately and never woke up. He suffered major brain damage and succumbed to his injuries a day later.

Brown played football in the Pop Warner football league during the 7th grade and continued playing up to his senior year of high school at Brien McMahon. In addition to football, Brown played baseball and basketball.

In February, Norwalk became the first city in the state to approve a concussion program for its youth sports designed to protect injured kids and prevent them from further injury.

The guidelines for dealing with a concussion in youth sports were approved by the Common Council and are designed to close the loophole in the current concussion law that protects only middle school and high school athletes on school-sponsored teams.
