Nigel Barker, a fashion photographer, humanitarian and judge on the hit reality TV series "America's Next Top Model," is coming to Westport on Wednesday night to sign copies of his new book, "Nigel Barker's Beauty Equation: Revealing a Better and More Beautiful You."
"I wanted to get out the concept of what I truly believe makes someone beautiful," Barker, 38, said in a phone interview. "For me, true beauty is not about being 6-feet tall, skinny and having well-defined cheekbones. Those are common standards, but it's nonsense. It's not what I look for."
At 7 p.m., Barker will be at the Barnes & Noble at the Post Plaza Shopping Center, at 1076 Post Road E. to talk about his book.
If true beauty goes beyond outward appearance, then what does this father of two look for in a person? In the book, he lists 10 attributes, including allure, compassion, confidence and humor, as essential elements to achieving overall beauty.
"I sat down and starting writing down words I thought represent beauty," Barker said. "Honestly, there are more [than 10 qualities], but these became key attributes to me."
How Barker, a former model turned photographer, came up with these essential elements is simple: He thought about the qualities in people he has met or photographed that made them stand out.
With his book, which Barker considers more of a workbook as he challenges readers to complete various exercises, he hopes to defy the current ideals that define beauty.
"I'd like to get a debate going on what beauty is and how to achieve it. That's why we launched the Beauty Equation website," Barker said. On the website, readers can create a portfolio and track their Beauty Equation progress, post photos and connect with other users. "People can make their portfolio private, but I'd love for people to keep them public so we can create this global community and get the conversation going."
