WESTPORT, Conn. Enhancing downtown Westport will be the focus of the Downtown 2020 Committee, a newly created body appointed by First Selectman Gordon Joseloff.
The mission of the committee will be to work toward a more vital, livable and pedestrian-friendly downtown and environs that offers diverse entertainment, dining, and recreational, residential and business opportunities, Joseloff said in a statement Wednesday.
The seven-member committee will be charged with advancing the recommendations of the Downtown Subcommittee of the Plan Implementation Committee, which was formed as recommended by the 2007 Town Plan of Conservation and Development, Joseloff said.
The Downtown 2020 Committee also will develop its own suggested changes for downtown, and will work with the subcommittee to implement those recommendations.
In addition to the subcommittee, the committee will work closely with the Planning & Zoning Commission, other town boards and commissions, town departments, outside stakeholders and the public, Joseloff said.
Westport resident Louis Gagliano, a retired business executive, has been appointed chairman of the committee. Gagliano, Joseloff said, has substantial experience in planning efforts in both the corporate and not-for-profit areas.
Residents Gerry Kagan, Robert Jacobs, Dan Kail, Valerie Smith-Malin, Jeffrey Mayer, and Craig Rebecca Schiavone also were appointed to the committee.
Our committee looks forward to working with other town groups and members of our community to accomplish the mission approved by the selectmans office, Gagliano said in the statement. It is our intention to be a coordinating body which will integrate efforts, existing and approved projects, to bring greater vitality to our downtown area..
