Westport firefighters responded to a call of a brush fire in the median on the Merritt Parkway between exits 42 and 44 at about 3:30 p.m. Monday.
When firefighters arrived, an area of about 10 feet by 50 feet was burning, Assistant Chief Larry Conklin said in a statement.
Westport firefighters, along with Fairfield firefighters, easily doused the flames and wet down the area, which was dry. The last responding unit left by 4 p.m.
The fire department reminds drivers to use their car ashtrays to dispose of cigarettes.
