Mayor Warns: Danbury Hospital Swamped With Flu Cases

DANBURY, Conn. — The emergency room at Danbury Hospital "is overwhelmed," Mayor Mark Boughton said on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

"Danbury Hospital is experiencing a large influx of patients due to the recent flu outbreak," Boughton said in a reverse phone call to Danbury residents at about 4 p.m.

People should go to the emergency room if they have these symptoms: bluish skin, high fever with rash, dizziness, not waking up, no tears when crying or excessive dehydration, Boughton said.

People feeling ill should call their doctors, Boughton said.

"Call your primary care physician — ER is overwhelmed," he said via Twitter.

Danbury Hospital asked the city to remind residents of ways to stop the spread of the flu, he said, offering these tips:

• Avoid close contact with others;

• Stay home if you're sick or not feeling well; and

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

The greatest risk is to children under age 18 or adults over age 50, he said.

"There is still time to get a flu shot," Boughton said. "Please consider doing so to help stop the spread of the flu."
