WESTPORT, Conn. A New Haven man was arrested in Westport early Saturday morning for drunken driving and possession of a weapon after he was found sleeping in his car, police said.
On officer on patrol spotted a car pulled off to the side of Wilton Road near the Merritt Parkway Exit 41 southbound on-ramp. The car's headlights were on and the engine was running. Inside the car, the officer spotted Piero Scheps hunched over asleep in the driver's seat, police said.
When the officer knocked on the window, Scheps, 22, woke up and appeared incoherent. Because Scheps was unable to roll down the window, the officer had him open the door, revealing a large, fillet-style cutlery knife between the seat and the pillar of the car, police said.
The officer smelled alcohol on Scheps' breath and noticed his eyes were red and glassy, police said. He failed field sobriety tests and the results of his breath test were .154 and .145.
Scheps was charged with operating under the influence and weapons in a motor vehicle. He was released after posting a $2,500 bond and is due in court on Dec. 27.
