“With poor road conditions, I don't want to put anyone in harm's way,” Malloy said in a news conference from Hartford. All nonessential state employees in the first shift have been asked to stay home.
All 837 of the states trucks and contracted trucks are out clearing primary and secondary roadways Wednesday morning, Malloy said. But “the roads are very slick,” and local roads are in bad shape, he said.
“With heavy snow falling across the state and a mix of sleet and freezing rain on the way, I am asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel. In addition, I have instituted a soft ban on tandem trucks on our interstate highways,” Malloy said.
The soft ban, he added, is working in conjunction with similar bans in New York and New Jersey. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has instituted a full travel ban on I-84.
Half of the flights out of Bradley Airport have been canceled, but the governor strongly encourages travelers to check with their airlines before heading out.
About 100 power outages statewide were reported, Malloy said.
State Police have received more than 300 calls since the storm began but reported no serious crashes.State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance urged residents to stay off roads, but urged travelers who must go out to reduce speeds.
“The bottom line is if you can stay home or work from home, please do,” Malloy said.
