Longshore Group Courts Writers

Westporters may soon have the chance win a place in the Longshore 50th Anniversary Committee's coffee table book about the town park. First though, Scott Smith, Mike Pettee, Sean Doyle and the rest of the committee need to figure out if and how their planned page turner will happen.

“So much of what we have done as a committee has been a leap of faith,” Smith said. He serves as the chairman.

Member Bill O'Leary agreed to gather concepts and ideas from the rest of the committeeto craft a Requests for Proposals (RFP) to writers and publishing companies. Smith and Dan Woog would like a chance to write the book themselves, but the amount of work is beyond what they can offer for free. Because of their interest, they will recuse themselves from involvement in crafting the RFP. Smith said they will also resign from the committee if necessary to avoid any conflicts.

Before they began debating the technicalities of book publishing, the committee voted to approve a proposal by The Editing Company to run an essay contest. The winner's essay will be included in the book that hasn't been designed yet. The committee is mulling over the possibility of other prizes.

Off-the-cuff estimates by some committee members placed the cost of production around $36,000. At the moment they have a few thousand dollars in the bank from sales of “Longshore Club Park, Westport's Crown Jewel.” The DVD is a 26 minute long history of the Longshore Country Club and the town's acquisition of it in 1960. Copies sell for $25 each.

Smith hopes sales of the DVD pick up. A public outdoor showing is scheduled for Aug. 10 at the Levitt Pavilion. Anyone who can't wait to see it, wants their own copy or just wants to help the committee out can purchase the movie at the Historic Society, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Inn at Longshore and a handful of other locations.
