Library Prepares for Summer Readers

The Westport Library will kick off its Summer Reading Club on June 12. Librarian Lynne Perrigo invites kids to pick up a reading journal and join the fun.

There isn't a tried and true list of required reads, but the library staff has compiled categories of suggestions for the different grade levels. “These are not only our basic picks for the summer but they are also what we are talking about in the schools,” said Perrigo. She keeps a suitcase full of books in her car for presentations to second graders.

“I make them promise to read only what they want to read,” she said, adding that required reading lists serve no function if they are full of material that bores children.

Students who register with the Summer Reading Club will get a journal to track their reading. Monthly prizes will be offered. Every time they finish reading three books they will get the chance to contribute some “funky” art to the children's library. Starting June 25, registered readers will be able to follow clues and answer questions in a weekly scavenger hunt. Correct answers will earn points spendable in the library store and cafe.

Lists of books appropriate for different reading levels are available here . The website also includes staff picks, award winners and online selections.

Some of the Summer Reading Club prizes are paid for by the Friends of the Westport Library. Westport Pizzeria, Westport Sunny Daes and Westport McDonald's also donate prizes. The scavenger hunt is funded by the Brian and Leslie Gold family.
