WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Public Works Department is launching its annual curbside leaf collection program Monday, Public Works Director Stephen Edwards announced. The collection period will continue through Dec. 3.
“Any leaves placed on the curbside during this period in biodegradable paper bags will be collected by the Westport Public Works Department,” Edwards said. “Leaves placed in plastic bags will not be picked up as the compost process cannot handle plastic bags.”
Residents who live on private roads must place their bagged leaves at an intersecting town road, Edwards said. Pickups will be conducted throughout town several times during the collection period. A final pass through will begin Dec. 3 and take one week, Edwards said. All properly bagged leaves put out before Dec. 3 will be collected, he said. Residents are encouraged to consider backyard composting. More information about composting can be obtained from the Conservation Department at 203-341-1170 or Earthplace at 203-227-7253. “The ease and cost savings of backyard composting provides a viable alternative to either carting the leaves to the town Yard Waste Site or filling of paper bags for the town's curbside pickup,” Edwards said. Residents with valid transfer station stickers on their cars can take their leaves directly to the yard waste site at 180 Bayberry Lane. If leaves are transported in plastic bags, residents must empty the bags before disposal. The yard waste site is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to noon Saturdays. From Nov. 3 through Dec. 1, Saturday hours will be extended until 3 p.m. Residents whose vans, pickups or tag-along trailers have valid stickers may deliver up to six, 30-gallon bags or containers full of leaves without a fee. A van, pickup or tag-along trailer exceeding the six bag limit will be charged $30 per load. Also, any vehicle or trailer larger than a conventional pickup will be charged $80 per ton. Dump tickets to cover the cost of the disposal fee can be purchased at Town Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays or by mail: Department of Public Works, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.
