Keep Your Shovel Handy As Spring Snow Flies In Westport

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- It didn't look or feel the first day of spring Friday as winter made what is hopefully its last gasp across Fairfield County.

The walkway is covered and the shovel is ready at this Danbury home on Friday afternoon as the snow piles up again.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place until 2 a.m. Saturday across the tri-state area as heavy snowfall came down late Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service said. A total of 2 to 3 inches or more had already fallen, causing schools to dismiss students early. Another 2 to 3 inches or more are possible before the storm is done.

Travel conditions may be hazardous due to slippery roads, icy conditions and reduced visibility.

It was yet another storm in what has already been a historically cold winter, marked by heavy and frequent snowfalls.

The late-winter / early-spring storm was expected to bring more snow until about 1 a.m., when it will change over to a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain.

The overnight low will be 27 degrees, with winds of 7 to 9 mph. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible.

For the first full day of spring on Saturday, there is a chance of snow and freezing rain before 1 p.m., with a slight chance of sprinkles after 5 p.m. It will be cloudy, with a high near 41 degrees but with wind chill values between 25 and 35.

Saturday night will be mostly cloudy, with a low of about 26 degrees.

Sunday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 37 degrees, which does not feel much like spring.
