WESTPORT, Conn. As Hurricane Irene makes its way closer to the state, power outages were on the rise in Westport. As of 3 a.m., Connecticut Light & Power reported 603 power outages in Westport. At 2:30 a.m., there were 598 Westport customers without power. Just 15 minutes earlier, 585 homes had been without power. A little more than an hour earlier at 12:50 a.m., only 16 Westport homes were reported without power.
Between 2 and 3 a.m., fallen trees had been reported on Compo Road South at Bradley Road, Pritchard Lane, Roseveille Road at Lost Lodge, at 52 Cross Highway and Compo Beach Road in Westport. A tree down was reported atop a wires at 3 Maple Lane. The town is closely monitoring storm activity through its Twitter account .
The heavy rains overnight were bands of Hurricane Irene, which was expected to hit the state Sunday morning or midday.
