A Stamford woman and an infant escaped serious injury Monday afternoon when the woman's car hit a tree on the Merritt Parkway.
At 12:44 p.m., the Westport Fire Department responded to a call of an accident between exits 42 and 44 northbound. When firefighters arrived, they found the car, which had crashed into a tree, Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar reported.
Firefighters treated the driver for facial injuries. She was later transported to Norwalk Hospital for further evaluation. The infant, who was properly secured in a car seat, was not injured.
Kepchar said the use of seatbelts and air bag deployment helped prevent more serious injuries. State police have opened an investigation.
