Rising costs at gas pumps may not stop people from driving, but according to Elgallo Alphonse at New Country Toyota of Westport, they are affecting what people drive.
"People are definitely compromising and getting smaller vehicles if they can," said Alphonse, a sales consultant. "In the past, the attitude was 'bigger is better.' That's not the case anymore."
According to the website Connecticut Gas Prices , the average cost of regular unleaded gas in the state is $3.30 a gallon. The national average is $3.09 a gallon. Here in Westport, the average price to fill'er up is $3.45 a gallon.
Although the Westport average is higher than the state average, there is some good news: The Gulf station on Post Road East offers one of the lowest prices for regular gas in the state at $3.19 a gallon. But some of the highest prices in the state are also found in Westport. Currently, at $3.91 a gallon, the Mobil station on Post Road East near Powers Court is ranked as the most expensive in Connecticut. Two other Westport gas stations appear on this list as well.
As a way to get more bang for their buck, drivers are going for cars with high fuel economy ratings, Alphonse said. But not everyone, such as people with large families, can cut down on size. That's why hybrids, which use more than one fuel source, have become especially popular.
The [Toyota] Prius is our most popular seller, he said, explaining it has a highway rating of 48 miles per gallon. In fact, it was the No. 1 most-selling car in North America in 2010.
