Phase one of Hales Court's $25 million expansion project is pushing forward. Wooden house frames are going up. Luckily, the area was spared significant damage from March's nor'easter, meaning it'll be on schedule to welcome families by Oct. 1.
Executive Director of the Westport Housing Authority Carol Martin said, "When it is safe and we can move families, we will relocate them as soon as we can get certificates of occupancy."
The expansion will take Hales Court from 40 units to 78. Martin said significant savings in the overall cost are being realized by reusing several of the buildings.
WHA relocated 17 families to help facilitate construction and safety. As phase one completes, they will return. Families in the phase two and three areas also will relocate to the new construction as the project progresses,
The new units are already spoken for according to Martin. The housing authority has more than 250 families on a waiting list. "This nowhere near gets to the extent of the need," said Martin. Hales Court is expected to be completed by December, 2011.
